The papers contain a satirical manuscript in the form of a Major Jack Downing letter to the editor of the Leveller, 1851 Feb., relating all the news from Downingville including the latest fuss over "Wimmens rites" which destroyed a local romance. In the correspondence, there is 1 letter from Smith to George Rex Graham, 1843 Jul 6, where Smith submits an article to Graham's Magazine and mentions another article, A race for a sweetheart; another letter recommends George W. Chase, a young lawyer moving west; and another From Smith to Francis O. J. Smith, 1845 Oct 27, discusses the indebtedness of Francis O. J. Smith of Portland, Maine, which he agrees to settle for three hundred dollars.
